Keeping your child’s teeth healthy is so important! As parents, it is essential to begin good dental habits early to stop decay and other issues. By following these 5 tips, you can ensure that your child has a healthy smile for years to come!

The Right Age to Start Dental Care

Before your child’s very first tooth emerges, it’s essential to begin thinking about their oral care. The American Dental Association suggests cleaning your child’s gums with a soft towel and brushing with a soft or extra soft toothbrush as soon as the first tooth erupts, usually around 6 months of age. This very early introduction to dental hygiene will establish the foundation for a lifetime of healthy and balanced routines.

Make Brushing and Flossing Fun

Regular brushing and flossing are crucial for keeping great dental wellness, but getting children to actually stick to this routine can be a challenge. To make this more fun, you can turn it into a game, play their favorite two minute song while they brush, or use toothbrushes and toothpastes with fun colors, flavors, and cartoon characters they recognize. Kids love to be independent and do things on their own, so letting them choose their own toothbrush and toothpaste can give them that sense of independence. Our goal is to start healthy habits early so that your kids can continue them as they grow into our favorite little people!

Toothpaste Selection for Different Ages

The American Academy of Pediatric Dentistry recommends using fluoride toothpaste as soon as the first tooth erupts. For children under 3 yrs old, we recommend a smear or rice grain size amount of fluoride toothpaste each time they brush. As they grow older and can spit after brushing, you can use a pea-sized amount of fluoride toothpaste on their toothbrush.

The Importance of Fluoride and Mouthwash

Dental products with fluoride, such as toothpastes and mouthwashes, are endorsed by the American Dental Association for their cavity-fighting properties. Fluoride helps strengthen tooth enamel and prevent dental decay. Mouthwash consisting of fluoride can also be beneficial in reaching areas that might be missed when brushing. Always supervise your kids when they use mouthwash to make sure they do not swallow it!

Foods to Promote Healthy Teeth

Diet and nutrition play a vital role in your dental health. Because oral health is related to systemic health, offer your children a well-balanced diet of fruits, veggies, dairy, and protein. Not only do these foods provide plenty of important vitamins and minerals for their growth, they also strengthen developing teeth and bones.

Foods and Habits to Avoid

As most of us have heard, eating too much sugar can lead to tooth decay. What many of us don’t realize is that both sugar and acid can lead to tooth decay. Many snacks that we don’t associate with sugar are crackers, chips, and pretzels, just to name a few. These snacks are made of simple carbohydrates which break down into sugars. In addition to snacks, several common drinks like juice, sports drinks, and sodas or lemonade, can also cause tooth decay.

Sugar is not only food for us, but it’s also food for the bacteria that live in our mouths. Once the bacteria consume the sugars, they produce acid, which over time can break down our teeth. It’s hard to completely avoid these things, but we can limit how often kids are consuming them throughout the day and avoid sipping on these drinks for long periods of time.

Schedule the First Dental Visit

Check-ups at a young age are crucial for establishing great oral habits. The American Academy of Pediatric Dentistry recommends children to have their first dental visit before their first birthday. This allows the dentist to monitor the child’s growth and address any concerns early.

Understand the Role of Pediatric Dentists

Pediatric dentists have completed a post-doctorate residency program in pediatric dentistry and have extensive experience in how to care for children of all ages and special needs patients. Pediatric dentists are trained to identify and manage early signs of dental issues, educate both parents and children on correct oral hygiene habits, and offer options on how to address your child’s dental needs. Pediatric dentists provide a kid-friendly setting and use techniques that make the dental experience comfortable and positive for kids. With help from a pediatric dentist, parents can set their children up for a lifetime of healthy smiles!

Interactive Ways to Learn About Dental Care

Healthy teeth are essential for general wellness and aid in correct chewing and speech development. By creating healthy habits early on, you’re setting your child up for a lifetime of success. Learning can be fun and interactive! There are tons of videos, books, games, and websites that are customized for different age groups and can make learning about taking care of teeth fun. Videos and books can show kids what to expect at their first dental visit including who they will meet and the tools their dentist may use.
