The Treatment
How long it takes, and what changes that.

Who it helps
Straight, properly aligned teeth are easier to keep clean and provide a more attractive appearance. A straight, healthy smile helps to boost self-esteem, self-confidence, and your child’s self-image.
If your child suffers from crooked, uneven, or misaligned teeth, orthodontic treatment can help.
The length of treatment
The length of your orthodontic treatment will depend on their individual plan. During the consultation with Dr. William Sung, we will discuss their options. Once you select your child’s treatment, we will estimate its length.
What can change the duration
There are factors that can affect the duration of the treatment. Some of these include:
- Early Orthodontic Intervention: If your child has had early intervention, some steps have already been completed. This may shorten the time needed for this treatment.
- Type of Treatment: Depending on your child’s needs, they may have braces, elastics, aligners, or other options. The type of treatment they receive will affect its length.
- Compliance: Following our instructions will allow your child’s treatment to work more quickly.
Three Ways In
Where a family usually starts.
The right one depends almost entirely on age, and on whether the permanent teeth have arrived yet.
Early intervention
An evaluation by age seven. Treatment may not be needed now, but it lets Dr. Nguyen watch the teeth as they arrive and catch what is easier to correct early.
Invisalign
Clear, removable aligners for mild to moderate misalignment, crowding, gaps, overbites and underbites in kids and teens.
Retainers
The retention phase, after the braces come off. The final result depends on this part more than families expect.
Why Here
Watching a bite arrive, not just straightening it.
Your child’s first adult molars begin to erupt around age seven. Those molars establish the back of the bite, which is what makes seven the age worth screening at.

What the age-seven screening watches for.
- Overbite. Top teeth sit substantially further forward than bottom teeth when teeth are closed.
- Underbite. Bottom teeth sit further forward than top teeth when teeth are closed.
- Open bite. Front teeth do not come together when back teeth are closed.
- Cross bite. Top teeth do not properly align with bottom teeth.
- Crowding. Teeth overlap and become crooked due to lack of space.
Is Invisalign safe for kids and teens?
Yes. Invisalign® is safe for kids and teens and is effective for treating many dental cases, including crowding, gaps, overbites, and underbites.
How is it different from metal braces?
Invisalign® uses clear, smooth plastic aligners instead of metal brackets and wires. They are nearly invisible, removable, and typically more comfortable.
How long does treatment take?
Most children complete Invisalign® in 6 to 18 months, depending on the severity of the case.
Will my child need a retainer afterwards?
Absolutely. Once Invisalign® treatment is complete, professional whitening or restorations such as porcelain veneers or crowns can enhance your child’s final smile.
