Most of what we do is making sure nothing has to be done.
The American Dental Association recommends dental visits at least twice per year. Regular exams and professional cleanings can help to ensure optimal oral health.

The cleaning
The American Dental Association (ADA) recommends dental visits at least twice per year. Regular exams and professional cleanings can help to ensure optimal oral health. At Mason Park Dental, our team consistently provides high-quality dental cleanings and thorough preventive exams.
Professional cleanings rid the teeth of harmful plaque and tartar build-up. This is important for preventing tooth decay, periodontal disease, and other oral health issues for your child. Additionally, a professional cleaning by our hygienist may remove some surface stains. This can help keep your child’s teeth looking whiter and brighter.
The examination
During your child’s examination, we will also:
- Evaluate their overall oral health
- Discuss oral hygiene practices and habits
- Check their bite and jaw for any issues
- Evaluate their risk of tooth decay, gum disease, and oral cancer
- Evaluate existing tooth restorations
- Take dental x-rays if necessary
What Is Under This
Six things prevention is made of.
Every one of these has a page of its own. They are all parts of the same twice-a-year habit.
Cleanings and exams
The twice-yearly appointment itself: plaque and tartar removed, the whole mouth checked, x-rays only if they are needed.
Dental hygiene education
What to do at home between visits, taught to you and to your child, at whatever age they are.
Fluoride treatment
A varnish that makes enamel more resistant to decay, recommended for children between six months and sixteen years.
Sealants
A coating on the chewing surfaces of the molars and premolars, where the grooves make decay most likely.
Mouth guards
Custom-fitted for contact sport, and for the sports where nobody thinks to ask for one.
Night guards
For grinding during sleep, when it has started to chip or wear the teeth.
Why Here
A specialist watching a mouth that is still being built.
A child’s six-month appointment is not a shorter version of an adult’s. What it is really checking is whether everything is arriving in the right order.

What a pediatric exam looks for.
- Whether the bite and the jaw are developing as they should.
- Whether the permanent teeth have room to arrive, which is what an evaluation by age seven is for.
- Habits, diet and brushing technique, which are the things that actually decide the next six months.
- Decay risk, so fluoride and sealants are offered to the children who need them.
How often should kids come in?
Kids should come in every six months for cleanings and checkups. Some children may need more frequent visits depending on their oral health needs.
What happens during a cleaning?
A cleaning includes gentle plaque removal, polishing, fluoride application, and an oral exam to check teeth, gums, and bite development.
Is fluoride safe for children?
Yes! Fluoride is safe and helps strengthen tooth enamel, making teeth more resistant to cavities. We customize fluoride use based on your child’s age and needs.
How can I prevent cavities at home?
Brush with fluoride toothpaste twice daily, floss daily, limit sugary snacks, and schedule regular dental visits every six months.
Why do children get cavities more easily?
Children’s enamel is softer, making teeth more prone to decay. Diet, brushing technique, genetics, and bacteria levels can all contribute to cavities.

Dr. Nguyen was thorough, gentle, and made sure I and my kids felt comfortable throughout the procedure. Genevieve was equally fantastic, friendly, and very attentive, making the cleaning process smooth and pleasant.
