Restorative dentistry

The last option, and only when the tooth cannot be kept.

Teeth may require extraction if they cannot be saved by root canal therapy or other treatment. Third molars, or wisdom teeth, are the most likely to need it.

The Reasons

Three reasons a tooth comes out.

Third molars, or wisdom teeth, are the last set of permanent molars to emerge, and the most likely to require extraction. Other teeth may too.

Impacted tooth

The tooth is trapped beneath bone or gums and not emerging properly.

Crowding or a small mouth

Emerging teeth may cause other teeth to shift or crack due to lack of space.

Decay or infection

When a tooth is affected by extreme decay or infection that cannot be corrected with filling or root canal treatment, it may require extraction.

Afterwards

What happens to the space.

A baby tooth that comes out early leaves a gap the neighbouring teeth will drift into, and the permanent tooth underneath still has to arrive somewhere.

Why a space maintainer usually follows.

  • Space maintainers are needed if your child loses a tooth early or has a baby tooth extracted due to dental decay.
  • The appliance holds the remaining teeth in a position that lets the permanent tooth erupt in the proper location.
  • Without one, the teeth shift into the open area and the permanent tooth struggles to come through.
  • It is fitted at the practice and checked at the ordinary six-month visits.

The Day

What is on offer for the appointment itself.

An extraction is the treatment children arrive most worried about, and the one where the room matters most.

What can be arranged.

  • Nitrous oxide, oral and IV sedation, and general anesthesia in a hospital setting at HCA West Houston.
  • A desensitization visit first, if this is not a day for a first impression of the practice.
  • Parents are always welcome to accompany their child.
  • The plan and the price explained before anything is done.
