What the treatment did
Most comprehensive orthodontic treatment will involve the use of braces or aligners. In either case, your child’s treatment involves minor movement of their teeth to correct misalignment. This ensures both a straight smile and an even bite.
Why retention decides the result
However, braces are not the only stage needed for a permanent orthodontic solution. Once your child’s braces have been taken off, the retention phase begins. It is vitally important that they follow through with retention to maintain their newly straight smile after treatment. Their final orthodontic results depend on their retainer, so be sure to keep their appointments with Dr. Tam Nguyen even after their braces have been removed.
The Kinds
Three retainers, and which one is likely.
There are a few distinct types of retainers that may be recommended to your child.
Clear retainers
A removable, transparent plastic tray that fits over the teeth. The one most teenagers are given, and the one most likely to end up in a napkin.
Traditional retainers
A removable appliance made of acrylic and a wire that sits on the front side of the teeth.
Bonded retainers
A thin, fixed wire temporarily bonded to the tongue side of the front teeth. Nothing to remember, and nothing to lose.
The Care
How to clean one without ruining it.
The case
When it is not in your child’s mouth, they should keep their retainer in its case. Bacteria can build up on your retainer, making it less hygienic and affecting the fit. Regular cleaning to remove these bacteria is a vital part of proper retainer care.
The cleaning
To clean the retainer, brush it gently with a wet toothbrush. Disinfect the retainer by soaking it in a cleansing solution. Thoroughly rinse the appliance with cold or room temperature water before placing it back in the mouth. Hot water can cause the retainer to lose its proper shape, so should be avoided.
The Invitation
Keep the retainer appointments, even after the braces come off.
