What it is, and whether it is safe.
What is Invisalign?
Invisalign® is a modern dental system that uses clear, removable aligners to gently shift teeth into their ideal position. It offers a discreet alternative to traditional metal braces.
Is it safe for kids and teens?
Yes. Invisalign® is safe for kids and teens and is effective for treating many dental cases, including crowding, gaps, overbites, and underbites.
How is it different from traditional braces?
Invisalign® uses clear, smooth plastic aligners instead of metal brackets and wires. They are nearly invisible, removable, and typically more comfortable.
The Process
From the consultation to the checkups.
How does treatment start?
Treatment starts with a consultation with Dr. Tam Nguyen, where we evaluate your child’s teeth and discuss their dental goals.
What is the digital scan for?
A digital scan uses 3D imaging to create a custom treatment plan and fabricate aligners made specifically for your child’s teeth.
How often will we come in?
We usually schedule checkups every 6 to 8 weeks to monitor progress and provide the next set of aligners.
Time
How long, and how many hours a day.
How long does treatment take?
Most children complete Invisalign® in 6 to 18 months, depending on the severity of the case.
How many hours a day must they be worn?
Aligners must be worn 20 to 22 hours per day for the best results, removed only for brushing, and flossing.
What if my child forgets to wear them?
Occasional short lapses are normal, but frequent or extended periods without wearing aligners can delay treatment and affect results.
Comfort and Care
Does it hurt, and how do we clean them.
Does Invisalign hurt?
Your child may feel mild pressure when switching to a new set of aligners, but this discomfort is typically minimal and far less than with traditional braces.
How do we clean the aligners?
Clean aligners daily using a soft toothbrush and lukewarm water. Avoid hot water, which can warp the plastic.
Will they irritate my child’s gums or cheeks?
Aligners are made of smooth, BPA-free plastic designed to prevent irritation to the gums and cheeks.
Eating and Brushing
Meals, brushing, and what they can drink.
Are there foods my child has to give up?
No! Because aligners are removable, your child can continue eating their favorite foods without restrictions.
What about brushing and flossing?
Since aligners are removed during cleaning, brushing and flossing are much easier and more effective than with traditional braces.
Can they drink with the aligners in?
Only water is recommended. Sugary or hot beverages can damage the aligners or cause buildup.
Candidacy
Whether it is right for your child.
Who is a good candidate?
Kids and teens with mild to moderate misalignment, crowding, gaps, overbites, or underbites are often great candidates for Invisalign®.
Does my child have to be responsible enough?
Yes. Since aligners are removable, children must be responsible enough to wear them consistently.
What if an aligner is lost or broken?
Contact our office right away. We may advise moving to the next set or replacing the lost tray, depending on your child’s progress.
Cost
Insurance, financing, and afterwards.
Does insurance cover Invisalign?
Many dental insurance plans-including Delta Dental, Cigna, and others-offer partial coverage for dental treatment, including Invisalign®. Our team can review your policy for you.
Do you offer financing?
Yes. We provide flexible financing options and accept Alphaeon, Lending Club, and CareCredit to help make treatment affordable.
Will my child need a retainer afterwards?
Absolutely. Once Invisalign® treatment is complete, professional whitening or restorations such as porcelain veneers or crowns can enhance your child’s final smile.
