Periodontics

Gum disease in a child is almost always reversible, and almost always caught late.

Periodontics involves the prevention, diagnosis, and treatment of periodontal disease. In children the whole of the work is usually noticing it.

The Condition

Gingivitis and periodontitis

Periodontal disease, also known as gum disease, is an inflammation and infection of the gum tissues. It includes the stages commonly known as gingivitis and periodontitis.

When plaque and tartar are left untreated on teeth and gums, gum disease may develop. Your child can reduce their risk of gum disease by brushing twice and flossing once every day. They should also have a dental exam and professional cleaning at least twice each year.

The signs of gingivitis

Gingivitis includes a variety of mild to moderate symptoms, such as:

  • Red, swollen gums
  • Sensitive teeth
  • Gums bleeding from normal brushing or eating
  • Chronic halitosis (bad breath)
  • Difficulty or pain chewing

The Risk

What makes it more likely.

Common risk factors for gum disease include poor oral hygiene habits, diabetes, smoking, and hormonal changes. Some medications can also increase the likelihood.

Habits

Brushing that misses the gum line, and flossing that is not happening at all. This is the one you can change today.

Health and medication

Diabetes, hormonal changes and some prescriptions all raise the risk, which is why we ask what your child is taking.

The rest of the body

Many recent studies have found that untreated gum disease negatively impacts other aspects of overall health, especially for patients with cardiovascular disease or diabetes.

Why Here

The visit that finds it is the ordinary one.

Your child can reduce their risk of gum disease by brushing twice and flossing once every day, and by having an exam and professional cleaning at least twice each year.

What the hygienist is looking at.

  • The gum line, for redness and swelling that a parent reads as normal.
  • Bleeding on brushing, which is the sign families most often dismiss.
  • Tartar, which cannot be brushed off once it has hardened.
  • Chronic bad breath, and pain or difficulty chewing.

A patient review

Dr. Nguyen was thorough, gentle, and made sure I and my kids felt comfortable throughout the procedure. Genevieve was equally fantastic, friendly, and very attentive, making the cleaning process smooth and pleasant.
